Grant announcement

Since the mid-1980’s in Ukraine, when control over research in the social sciences relaxed, a great number of contributions to the study of Economics have appeared. Relevant books and articles can be divided by institution, according to those based on research conducted by institutions associated with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, institutions of higher education, government bodies, and unaffiliated organizations, including Ukrainian branches of international or foreign research institutions. Although each of these categories can be expected to have a specialization in a particular area of Economics, all of them have most likely been primarily interested in Transition Economics. Yet, these organizations do not seem to have a working relationship with one other.

The purpose of this project, called “Recent Developments in Economic Research in Ukraine,” is to obtain a general overview and critical evaluation of these contributions. Specifically, it is necessary:

  1. to assemble a bibliography of the most important contributions within these categories of institutions during the last 15 years;
  2. to classify them according to fields of research and review them individually or, preferably, by grouping them according to the accepted fields; and
  3. most importantly, to evaluate both the theoretical and applied contributions within the context of present Western scholarship.

The grant for this project will be $2,000. (This is the balance left, after the International Ukrainian Economic Association’s publication, Ukrainian Economic Review, ceased to appear.) The winner of the grant will be expected to produce a resulting paper that is in the Ukrainian language and no longer than 50 (single-spaced) pages. This paper will be due on December 1, 2005. The grant committee will help with, but not be responsible for, publication of the paper.

All applicants for the grant must be professional economists, no older than 40 years of age, in Ukraine. The application must include the applicant’s curriculum vitae, including his/her bibliography, and a description of proposed research that is no longer than five pages. The application must be delivered to the grant committee, consisting of three members, by March 31, 2005. This committee will review the applications and announce the grant winner by June 30, 2005.
