IAUS Statement during Orange Revolution

We, as members of the Bureau of the International Association of Ukrainian Studies and as citizens and scholars of several countries, express our solidarity with the citizens of Ukraine in their struggle for the rule of law, the observance of human rights, and democratic processes more generally.

We support our Ukrainian colleagues in education and science who have courageously called for a government that enjoys the confidence of society and that is free of corruption and criminal abuses.

We protest against the actions of the Russian and Belarusan Presidents and the Russian State Duma, not only as blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign, independent state, but equally as revealing the lack of commitment of those officials to a future of democracy and prosperity for the peoples of Russia and Belarus.

A free, stable, and prosperous Ukraine will serve as an encouraging example to the forces in Russia and Belarus who favor government that respects human rights, established constitutions and international law.

In the name of the Bureau of the International Association of Ukrainian Studies signed:

Prof. Mark von Hagen (USA), President of IAUS
Prof. Yaroslav Hrytsak (Ukraine), First Vice-President of IAUS
Prof. Frank Sysyn (Canada), Vice-President of IAUS
Prof. Giovanna Brogi Bercoff (Italy), Vice-President of IAUS
Prof. Mark Pavlyshyn (Australia), Vice-President of IAUS
