Preparations for the 6th Congress
Dear Colleagues:
This letter is to update you on preparations for the 6th Congress of the International Association for Ukrainian Studies in Donetsk, Ukraine:
- Funding for Congress: Please note that the funding of the 6th Congress has been approved, and the Ministry of Education of Ukraine have transferred the appropriate funds to Donetsk State University. This would cover the organizational costs of the Congress, as well as the travel and accommodation costs for all residents of Ukraine whose proposals have been approved.
- Proposals and congress program: The Organizing Committee has finalized the acceptance of panel, roundtable and individual paper proposals. If you have not yet received a response from the Organizing Committee, you will obtain one by email in the upcoming weeks. The Organizing Committee also plans to compile a conference program listing all of the presenters and their paper topics, which will be placed on the MAU website (www.mau.org.ua) as soon as possible.
- Congress registration costs: In reaction to responses from several IAUS members, the Organizing Committee has modified the registration costs of the Congress. Advanced registration costs for the Congress are now as follows:
- Participants from Ukraine and former communist countries not part of the European Union: 50 hryvnia
- Participants from former communist countries that are part of the EU: $25
- Graduate students (excepting those from Ukraine): $25
- All other participants: $50
- Payment of registration costs: Please note that the registration payment procedure has also changed and that ALL IAUS CONGRESS PARTICIPANTS CAN PAY THEIR REGISTRATION FEE ON-SITE IN DONETSK. Nonetheless, those presenting papers at the Congress are required to enroll as members of the IAUS with the national association of the country of which they are citizens. If you have not yet become a member of your country’s national association, we encourage you to do so and can provide you with appropriate contact information.
- Donations: The Organizing Committee is asking that any IAUS Congress participant, particularly those from Western countries, donate a contribution above and beyond their registration cost, in order to help with the subsidization of Ukrainian and other participants from the former Soviet Union. SUCH DONATIONS WOULD BE REQUESTED IN ADVANCE OF THE CONGRESS, BY JUNE 1, 2005, in order for arrangements for Ukrainian participants to be made in time. If you are able to donate such a contribution, please contact Diana Howansky at ukrainianstudies@columbia.edu for information about next steps.
- Opening ceremony date: Please note that THE OPENING CEREMONIES FOR THE 6TH CONGRESS HAVE BEEN PUSHED FORWARD TO THE EVENING OF JUNE 28, 2005. Panels will commence their work immediately on the morning of June 29. The Organizing Committee, therefore, asks that you make appropriate travel and accommodation plans reflecting this change.
- Travel and accommodations: The Organizing Committee is currently compiling more detailed information about travel to Donetsk and accommodations within the city. In the meantime, Congress participants can access the following websites for information about travel to Donetsk: for trains, see this website and, for planes, see this website.
If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Diana Howansky at ukrainianstudies@columbia.edu or (1-212) 854-4697.
